A Trip Down Memory Lane

Image from blog.chron.com

It’s been two years, and a long journey. But on April 27, 2014, at 2:18 AM in the morning, my novel was finished. Slow at some places and rushed in others–yes. Devoid of wonderfully perfect characterization–yes. With random plot strings hanging off at every corner–yes. With all of its imperfections and craziness and inconsistencies and in-congruencies, my novel was born.

Which, if you think about it, is quite like a normal human being. Like any human being, my novel needs revision, guidance and support. And those I plan to give it. But before that, I think it’s time for a trip down memory lane–from where my novel started, to where it ended up now.

As my character said:

Celia. You started out Celia and I started out Sam. Who knows who we’ll end up as?”

*Author’s Note: Character names are changed for the purpose of this preview… I may have finished my novel, but I’m still paranoid! All quotes and writing (c) Sabrina Wolfheart

So here, have a trip down memory lane: all my winner’s certificates and novel covers for this story, right from Day 1 till Day 730. (Quotes from my novel are at the verrryyyy bottom, so be forewarned).

Don’t mind the pixelation–I lost my original Winner’s Certificate in a computer crash. Luckily, my novel was fully and safely backed up 🙂

During this month I wrote 30k of character backgrounds, plot points, and backstories. Planning for the win!

July 2013

I began to rewrite my novel during July 2013. What was that plan thingy again? Oh, well. I think I’ll just pants it.

I hit 50k during this month. Pantsing and late nights for the win!

Awarded just today for finishing my novel and meeting my word-count goal of 62.5k. I guess pantsing does work, after all.

My Favorite Quotes:

When you’re writing, you pick up some favorite quotes. Here are some of mine from The CyberWorld.

We will build a new world then. All the politicians, doctors, engineers—imagine, Breeze. All of that technology and ideology—saved.”    — Chapter 55, page 125

My mother had always said that eyes were the key into a man’s soul; sometimes, when the rest of them is hooded and masked in their youth, their eyes are the key to their elderliness, their fragility, everything they hold dear to them. All in their eyes. It was true for him, at least at this moment, looking into his eyes. I was intrigued and frightened at the same time, afraid to look into those complex, saddened eyes, and yet the truths and secrets written in their depths fascinated me.”  — Chapter 50, page 110

I am real, and I am smart, and I know what is going on. I am not a psychopath. I’m trying to save their lives. Those people aren’t smart enough to remember. I will never forget.” — Chapter 54, page 123

And my verrryyyyy favorite…. *drumroll please*

We can do this.  You and me. We can rip down the world and restore it. Build an entirely new civilization. Make it everything she knew it could be, and willed it to be. Put one thousand, five hundred and twenty-three people’s lives at stake. Because it could all be so much more. And this life, the life they just woke up from right now—it isn’t a life worth living.”
